Every day without fail, my aunt says “arigato” (translates to “thank you”) and “kansha shimasu” (“I am grateful”). She is grateful for her ancestors, religious community, spiritual practice and health. This is something that many of my mentors have practiced, especially my aunt, who celebrated Missav – Mature her 100th birthday in January.
Campsites are often located near onsen, which can be quite convenient. Do some groundwork before choosing where to go, the Japan Youth Hostel page is a good place to start. Words such as wanpatān ワンパターン (one + pattern, means “to be in a rut,” “to have a one-track mind”) and sukinshippu スキンシップ (skin + -ship, “physical contact”), although coined by compounding English roots, are nonsensical in a non-Japanese context.
If you decide to skip the Kiso Valley, the next obvious place to add to your itinerary for 2 nights would be Osaka. I’ve personally spent about five days there this year and come to enjoy it. I don’t list it first, more so because I would still choose to prioritize Kyoto and Tokyo, but the city does offer a lot if you’re interested in exploring more. Today, most visitors head to the towns of Magome and Tsumago (formally spelled “Tsumago Juku”), which have been carefully preserved. They’re connected by a sleepy stone path that winds through the forests, up and through gardens and farms.
There are also host clubs (ホストクラブ hosuto kurabu or ホスクラ hosu kura) where the roles are reversed, and female customers pay for attractive male company instead. In both of these, you will generally be expected to buy drinks for your host/hostess, and not doing so will greatly upset them as these make up a significant part of their income. A girls bar (ガールズバー gāruzu bā or ガルバ garuba) is similar to a hostess club, except that the attractive women are bartenders and stay behind the bar when chatting with customers. These are typically cheaper than hostess clubs, but just like in hostess clubs, you will be expected to buy drinks for your bartender. A seku kyaba (セクキャバ) is the erotic version of the hostess club, in which limited physical intimacy is allowed. Remember, the key is to keep exploring, experimenting, and adapting your approach as you progress on your Japanese learning journey. Although I’m a lover of writing Hiragana and Kanji, most of our writing is done on keyboards these days, right? By mastering typing Hiragana, along with a bit of Katakana and Kanji down the line, we’ll cover the vast majority of modern writing needs.
